New Quarterly and video vignette released
VANCOUVER, BC (Jan. 24, 2022) — The first issue of the Landform Design Quarterly for 2022 features a close look at the role of women in mining. The essay is based on a presentation delivered by Miriam Clark, Christine Daly, M. Anne Naeth, and Michelle Peters during a technical panel discussion hosted in October 2021, by the Calgary, Alberta, chapter of Women in Mining Canada. The essay provides a brief history of mine closure and reclamation, a closer look at several case studies on mines in Canada and Australia, and anticipates future trends.
The Winter 2022 newsletter also includes a summary of the LDI’s participation in another online gathering of mine closure professionals, this one hosted by the Swedish Mining Association. The webinar, also held this past October, included presentations from LDI Founder Gord McKenna, Technical Advisory Panel Member Steven Pearce, and LDI members Neeltje Slingerland and Matt Baida.
The newsletter, as well as all past issues, is available to all here.
Meanwhile, LDI members can now view the latest episode of the landform design video vignette series, “How to know your mining materials,” at the members site. (Select the VIDEO VIGNETTES option under TOOLS in the main menu.)
In this mini-lecture, host Gord McKenna demystifies the long list of materials involved in mine operations. He notes that, while most mines understand the big geotechnical issues involved in operating a mine, such as tailings and waste rock properties and volumes, upwards of a dozen other waste streams are less well characterized. All of them will end up somewhere on the post-mining landscape, and getting a handle on not only the geology of the materials, but the regulations that apply to them, is essential to successful reclamation.
The take-home message is “your mine waste could be someone else’s ore.” In addition, starting with this episode, the LDI is providing infographics that help explain the video-vignette.
